The victims of the 20 January 1990 tragedy were commemorated in Chisinau
The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Republic of Moldova organized a commemorative event dedicated to the bloody events of 20 January 1990.
The commemorative event was attended by the members of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, officials of the Government of the Republic of Moldova, heads and members of the diplomatic missions accredited in the Republic of Moldova, public figures and our compatriots.
In his speech, Ambassador Ulvi Bakhshaliyev stressed that the bloody events on 20 January became a symbol of struggle of Azerbaijani people for independence, had a crucial role in the formation of Azerbaijani national identity and has become a turning point in the restoration of state independence as, after this tragedy the national liberation movement became a full political reality, took on an irreversible character, and the people of Azerbaijan saw their future only in an independent Azerbaijan. The diplomat also mentioned that the National Leader Heydar Aliyev was the first to give political and legal assessment to the events of 20 January at the level of the supreme legislative body - the Milli Majlis. In conclusion, the Ambassador said that the memory of all heroes-martyrs will live forever in the heart of every Azerbaijani.
The Co-chairman of the Parliament Friendship Group Moldova-Azerbaijan, Vitalie Jacot noted that the Moldavian people understand well the pain and aspirations of the Azerbaijani people for freedom, because the history of Moldova also has the pages of struggle for independence and the right to determine their own future. The Member of the Parliament concluded: “Dear friends, on behalf of the Moldovian people, I would like to assure you that today we mourn together with you and express our deep respect for the Azerbaijani people, their courage and steadfastness. May the memory of the victims of this tragedy be eternal, and our solidarity and friendship remain strong and firm”.
In his speech, the Chairman of the Azerbaijani Congress in Moldova Elchin Bayramov pointed out this tragedy united and raised Azerbaijan as people fearlessly fought for independence, justice and freedom.
During the event musicians from “Moldova Youth Orchestra” performed famous Azerbaijani and international compositions. An exhibition of historical photos dedicated to the tragedy of 20 January was presented to the guests.
